The department of Landes in the Aquitaine region, south of Bordeaux, was established in the French Revolution. It is partly constitutive of the "Landes de Gascogne" which it takes its name.
Of rural tradition, the Landes, the second largest department of France, borders of the departments of Gironde, Lot-et-Garonne, Gers and Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Its forest is the argest in Europe.
The natural assets of Landes have enabled the development of major economic sectors such as tourism – the surfboarding at international level - the spa - the timber industry with maritime pine, the main tree species used and the gastronomy with foie gras, duck, Armagnac, etc.
Since 1905 the Côte d'Argent, the name given by Maurice Martin, poet and journalist, refers to the Aquitaine coastal from Anglet in Soulac. This is the second longest coastline in french.
